Why Volunteer at Habitat for Humanity ReStore?

Volunteering at Habitat for Humanity ReStore is one easy way you can get started with the process of helping local families realize their dream of homeownership. ReStore is an integral part of Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio’s building and restoration processes. As you give your time and effort to ReStore, more and more resources are available to put toward preparing the homes of Habitat partner families. That’s a big reason we rely on volunteers to power ReStore, but there are many reasons to serve in this way:

There’s Something for Everyone

There are many opportunities to serve at Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and we would love to partner with you in an effort to eliminate sub-standard housing in our east central Ohio communities. Take a look at some of the volunteer options that are available:

Groups

ReStore can accommodate groups of up to ten people. Volunteer dates must be scheduled in advance. This is a great team-building activity for people in your work place, place of worship, and civic group. It’s a great way to give back to the community!

Donations Assistant

The donations assistant works on the loading dock accepting donations directly from drop-off donors. The merchandise is then cleaned and taken to the sales floor.

Merchandise Volunteer

Arrange merchandise displays in creative ways so that they are attractive to shoppers.

Mr./Mrs. Fix-It (Item Repair)

We’re always looking for people to repair or touch-up furniture and other items that are slightly damaged.

Front Desk Assistants

Help bag items, assist customers with checkout, and help with paperwork

Customer Service

Assist customers by helping them find items in the store, measure items if necessary, and carry items to their vehicles.

Recycling Assistant

ReStore recycles all types of metal and cardboard. We need knowledgeable people to help sort these materials for efficient recycling efforts.

Upcycler

Creative people who can reupholster, restore, and/or remake items into something else.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear to volunteer at the ReStore?
Wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and closed toe/heel shoes. Athletic shoes or boots are best – no ballet slippers, crocs, heels, clogs, sandals, etc.
I’ll be there all day, do you provide lunch?
ReStore does not provide lunch, but there are several lunch options nearby. There is a break room with a refrigerator and a microwave if you would like to pack a lunch.
I would love to get my family more involved. Can I bring my kids along with me?
For safety reasons, our Restore volunteers must be at least 14 years of age. Please call (330) 915-5888 if you have any other questions about bringing your children.
Can I bring a group along?
Certainly! We love to have groups volunteer at ReStore. We can even schedule a special time for your group. Contact our Outreach Coordinator at (330) 915-5888 to arrange a time and please note that all volunteer groups must be scheduled in advance.
How does my time help Habitat for Humanity?

Every task a volunteer does replaces the time of a paid staff. This means that you are keeping our overhead cost down and allowing us to direct even more of our proceeds to Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio.

 

I have a special skill that I think would be helpful to Habitat, but I don’t see a category anywhere under the Volunteer Opportunities. How can I help using that skill?
