3 Ideas for How to Decorate Your Walls Using Home Materials

by | May 7, 2020

Updating your walls with nontraditional materials is a great way to change the appearance of your home. Additionally, if your space is mostly one large room, you can define it by creating a unique area with a one-of-a-kind wall hanging. Regardless of the size of your space, getting creative with your walls is a great way to personalize your residence.

Make a Feature Wall Using Flooring

Adding vinyl plank flooring to a wall is an original and striking way to define the space. This treatment can also look terrific behind a bookcase or some other display item. It doesn’t take much material to fashion a unique look in your home. To create the perfect feature wall, use natural wood, laminate, luxury vinyl, stone or tile on the first wall you see when entering a room. The result will be dramatic and lend your interior decoration an entirely new look.

Make a Statement Using an Area Rug

If you have a beautiful rug that doesn’t work as flooring in your home, consider adding it to a wall. This type of treatment can not only create an arresting accent sure to catch the eye but also provide you with a bit of insulation against cold or sound. If noisy neighbors are an issue, take a square or rectangular rug and hang it above your sofa or favorite chair. If your sofa is a solid color, try to choose a rug with a pattern that includes that tone. To ensure the rug is the focal point, don’t place anything else on that wall.

Use Fabrics

People who once lived in castles used fabrics on their walls to provide warmth and visual appeal. If you have a bare wall that gets cold or needs some special character, consider decorating it with fabric for an easy feature you can change to suit your mood. A mandala scarf is a great addition to any wall. If you need insulation, you can back the scarf with foam or a blanket to cut down on cold air or noise. A beautiful bedspread or quilt can also be draped over a mounted rod.

Walls don’t have to be painted. Even if you’re in an apartment and not allowed to make many changes, you can update your space with a rug or selections of fabric. If you have a bookcase with an open back, you can give it an elegant backing of vinyl flooring planks. Whatever your style, there’s something around the house you can use to make your space look fabulous.
