5 Amazing DIY Tips to Brighten Up Your Home on the Cheap

by | Jun 20, 2018

Sometimes, it’s a bit difficult to find an affordable interior designer (though not impossible), but you can definitely see if there are areas of your home you can decorate yourself as well. Just as you would with hiring a designer, you need to establish your style, what your needs and goals are, and how much area you’re going to be working with. It’s fun to decorate your home in beautiful, bright patterns and your own unique version of love.

1

Use Crates and Outdoor Pillows to Create Your Own Platform Swing on Your Porch

Get crates, wooden planks, outdoor primer and paint, and outdoor clear-coat finish to cover your wood with. Get some outdoor pillows and some rope. The whole family can be involved with painting, varnishing, hanging and balancing the platform swing until it’s perfect. Be sure and put a small hidden cabinet underneath to store everyone’s favorite books to read outside.

2

A Whole New Set of (Safe!) Brightly Colored Dishes

We would suggest custom painting your own set of white Corelle ware, instead of seeking second-hand brightly colored dishes. A lot of bright colored plates from the early 70’s had lead in them, so avoid all of that entirely. Instead, get the appropriate paint and gloss and paint your own set of modern Corelle plates and bowls.

3

Create Nurturing Safe Spaces and Hidey Holes for Reading and Thinking

Find round pillows and reupholster them. Put them on custom-painted crates and boxes in tiny hidden nooks and crannies in your home. Add a small lamp for reading and enjoy the coziness.

4

Make Family Time Easy with Painted Bookcases in Your Living Room

Make it easy for your family to share books and reading out loud to each other in the evenings. Get all of your kids involved with painting the bookcases different colors. Then, read to the little ones first before you put them to bed. Read to the older kids next, and to each other (in private) last. This is how reading and nurturing can be carried on from generation to generation.
