Whether you’re already a plant expert or you’re looking to become one, creating a wine glass planter from thrifted glass is a creative and sustainable way to repurpose items. Grab a glass (or a few) from ReStore to make yourself and your friends a planter they’ll love. Here are step-by-step instructions to guide you through the process:
Materials Needed to Make a Wine Glass Planter:
- Thrifted wine glass
- Small plants or succulents
- Potting soil
- Decorative stones or pebbles
- Charcoal (optional, for drainage)
- Small gardening tools
- Decorative elements (optional)
- Waterproof adhesive or hot glue gun (optional)
Instructions to Make a Wine Glass Planter:
1. Select a Wine Glass
Choose a wine glass from your ReStore haul that has a wide and stable base. This will prevent the planter from tipping over.
2. Clean the Wine Glass
Wash the wine glass thoroughly with soap and water to remove any dirt, dust, or residues. Dry it completely before moving on to the next step.
3. Prepare Drainage
To ensure proper drainage for your within your wine glass planter, add a layer of small stones or pebbles to the bottom of the wine glass. Optionally, you can include a thin layer of charcoal on top of the stones to help with filtration.
4. Add Potting Soil
Fill the wine glass with potting soil, leaving enough space at the top for your plants. Create a small well or depression in the soil to accommodate the roots of your chosen plants.
5. Plant the Greenery
Carefully remove the plants or succulents from their containers, gently loosen the roots, and place them into the well you created in the soil. Adjust the soil around the plants to secure them in place.
6. Decorate the Top
Sprinkle decorative stones or pebbles on top of the soil for a polished look. This also helps in retaining moisture and preventing the soil from drying out too quickly.
7. Decorative Your Wine Glass Planter
If you want to add a personal touch, consider attaching decorative elements to the stem or base of the wine glass, or by painting the glass. You can use waterproof adhesive or a hot glue gun to secure items like small charms, ribbons, or decorative labels.
8. Care Instructions
Place your wine glass planter in a location with appropriate sunlight for the type of plants you’ve chosen. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between watering sessions to prevent overwatering.
9. Maintenance
Keep an eye on your wine glass planter, trim any overgrown plants, and replace the soil periodically to ensure the well-being of your green companions.
By following these steps, you can transform a thrifted item into a charming and unique wine glass planter, just in time for spring! Once you’ve finished don’t forget to tag ReStore on Facebook and Instagram—we can’t wait to see what you create!
